The life of Amarbayasgalant monastery headmonk Olonbayar. The monastery is one of the only active monasterys left in Mongolia. During the communist reign until 1991 practically all monasteries throughout Mongolia was destroyed. Today 30 monks live and learn from their headmonk. Before Soviet times a couple of thoussand monks lived here. I visited the monks for 4 days during July 2011 and followed the headmonk during his daily chores. Everyday he gets up at 5AM wakes up the younger monks and teaches them about the buddhist beliefs – and even though he is only 25 years old, he has been in this monastery since he was three.
Amarbayasgalant Khiid is located in the northern part of Mongolia, around 1 days drive from Ulaanbaatar. Situated in a valley 40 km from the mainroad.
